Computer & Information Literacy

The ability to use computers to access and present information is an important basic skill. For this reason the USU Computer and Information Literacy Requirement has been implemented as part of University Studies. This same requirement is also a part of the general education requirement of colleges and universities throughout Utah.

Many students coming to USU will already have acquired these skills through high school course work, concurrent enrollment, or other means. Others may possess some but not all of the required skills, and still others may possess none of the required CIL skills. Regardless of the skill level or background of an incoming student, everyone must pass all six of the CIL examinations with a 70% or higher as part of the University Studies requirement. There is no required order in which the examinations should be taken. There is no letter grade, score, or college credit associated with passing any or all of the examinations. Your CIL requirement should be completed during your first year here at USU. Starting the first day of Fall 2008, you need to have the CILs passed before you earn 60 USU credits or you will be assessed a $30 late penalty.

There are several USU courses and majors which have completion of the CIL requirement as a prerequisite. Many USU classes require students to communicate by electronic mail, to be able to electronically access library and Internet resources, to be able to present information in spreadsheet and/or graphical form, etc. Students without CIL skills will find themselves at a disadvantage in such courses.

Do you owe $30?

After the last two years of charging the CIL fee only when students request a CIL testing account, we have resumed the previous practice of automatically charging the CIL fee when students enroll at USU, knowing the tests must be taken. If you believe you are not required to take the tests, but have been charged the fee, or if you have been charged twice for it, please fill out this form:
<<REFUND FORM>>
or send an email to cilmgr@cc.usu.edu
with all the information requested on the above form so we can refund the fee.

Some students that started prior to Spring 2008 were recently charged the fee incorrectly. Those fees should be automatically refunded soon, but if it does not get refunded as we get closer to the fee payment deadline, fill out the form above so we can manually remove the charge.
